Which Remote trainer to buy?
Remote Dog Trainer Summary
The following is a suggested remote trainer guide for consumers.
Firstly there are a few questions to ask yourself
The size , age and breed of the intended dogs ? Minimum age for use of any e-collar is 5 months, this is the age where most dog trainers agree that a dog has the mental capacity to understand the relationship between the correction and the misdeed.
Chihuahuas and Great Danes are both canines, but both need different collars based on their physical size. There are basically two sizes of receiver collar – one is standard, the other is full size. Standard size have regular output, good for collies, kelpies and regular size dogs, whereas the full size receiver are best for pig dogs, larger breeds and medium to large stubborn breeds
I also suggest that you consider the breed. Some breeds have been selectively bred for tenacity such as terriers, some dogs are bred as guard dogs or hunters. A good example of breed influencing training & bark collar selection are Jack Russell Terriers. They have been bred with a great deal of tenacity. They often vocalise to inform their owners about perceived intruders or threats , JR’s are small dogs, but often need a higher level correction to overcome their tenacity. Alaskan Malamutes & Huskies need the highest level of training collar, their breed are amongst the least domesticated.
Pig dogs tend to be tough individuals, they are used to pain and discomfort, obviously a lower powered collar is not suitable for them.
How Tech savvy is the user ? The most simple to use e-collars are Dogtra, however Garmin tend to have more features (and more buttons). Older farmers who are tech challenged often ask for a remote trainer that is easy to use.
How many dogs do you have? All Garmin systems are modular (expandable), so you can add additional collars to a base kit. All Garmin systems will take 3 collars in total, while the Garmin Pro 70 can take up to 6 collars. Dogtra however have some systems that are modular, You can add a second collar to an IQ, ARC or Edge. While other Dogtra systems will not take additional collars such as the 200C, 202C, 1900S & 1902S.
Lastly, a remote trainer for home domestic use generally don’t need long range, but do consider the size of your dog. A Dogtra IQ is a small system with 365 mtr range and will suit small to medium breeds. While the Num’axes Remote Trainer 250 is a budget priced remote trainer for medium to large dogs.
