One of the simplest and most humane training aids for working with dogs is the electronic collar. It is also unquestionably the most controversial subject ever likely to be brought up when the words shock collar are used. Many people get upset at the thought of administering a tiny jolt of static electricity as a correction to their beloved pet, while not thinking twice about giving their dog a much more painful whack on the back for stepping out of line, or dragging him off his feet with a "choke" collar when training him to heel. These are just some examples of ‘training’ that some people use to correct a dog’s behaviour and with that said a dog training collar is just an added tool to an owner’s or dog trainers kit.
When you understand how these collars work the benefits of working with this type of collar are simple e.g. the trainer can immediately correct a dog's mistakes at a distance far greater than leash training allows. A dog training collar is not a magic time-saving device to speed up training.
One of the basic steps before using a dog training collar or e-collar as they are also known as is to make sure the dog knows the meaning of the command he is refusing to follow, e.g. ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘come’ this is particularly important if you are training a dog for yard work or utility training. This is when timing is everything when using the correction from the dog training collar and because all dog’s are different you will need to find the correct stimulation level at which to correct the dog.
