Bark Control — Your Questions Answered
Bark Control — Your Questions Answered
Excessive barking is one of the most common behavioural challenges dog owners face — and it can be caused by any number of things. Territory, boredom, anxiety, habit, or other dogs nearby. The good news is there are effective, humane solutions that work. Below we answer the most frequently asked questions our team receives about bark control.
My dog barks from separation anxiety. Will a bark collar help?
Yes. When a dog is barking from separation anxiety, it is working itself up into a more anxious state — each bark reinforces the next. When a bark control collar interrupts this cycle, the dog no longer escalates and typically becomes much more relaxed and balanced. The key is stopping the pattern early, before it becomes entrenched.
What are my options when it comes to bark control?
There are three categories of bark control products. Each works differently and the right choice depends on your dog’s size, temperament and situation.
| Option 1 — Static (most effective) | Option 2 — Citronella | Option 3 — Ultrasonic |
|---|---|---|
| Can be set to vibration only, or vibration warning before a gentle static correction. Adjustable levels to suit individual dogs. The most effective bark control option. Please check state legislation in your area. | Sprays citronella when the dog barks. The combination of smell, sound and feel of the spray engages multiple senses to interrupt barking. A good option where static collars may not be suitable. | Emits a high-frequency sound dogs respond to, distracting them from the barking trigger. Not guaranteed to work on all dogs — most effective on smaller breeds with milder temperaments. |
What level do I put the static collar on?
Always start at the lowest level and work up gradually. Each dog responds differently. When you increase the level, watch your dog carefully. You’re looking for a subtle response — a shake of the head or a slight change in posture — that confirms the dog has felt the correction. A verbal yelp means the level is too high. Reduce it immediately and find the level just below that response.
What is auto rise?
Some models include an auto rise feature. When the dog barks, the collar starts at the lowest level and gradually increases the correction — for example, level 1, 2, 3, 4 — until the dog stops barking. Once the dog stops, the collar resets back to level 1 and the cycle begins again if barking resumes. Unlike a manual collar where you set and lock a specific level, the auto rise collar always starts from the lowest setting on each new bark cycle.
This makes it a good option for owners who want the dog to be able to bark a little at home for security reasons, without excessive barking. It also works well on smaller or more sensitive dogs, as the gradual increase means corrections start gently and only intensify if the dog continues barking.
Which sensor is best — vibration or microphone?
Bark collars use one of two sensor types.
Vibration sensor: Detects barking through vibration in the dog’s vocal cords. The collar must be fitted correctly in the centre of the throat. This is the better choice for households or kennels with multiple dogs — it only responds to the dog wearing the collar, not other dogs barking nearby.
Microphone sensor: Detects the sound of the bark, including howling and whining. Excellent for single-dog households. Can still work with multiple dogs as long as there is some separation.
Fitting tip — vibration sensor collars
The collar must sit in the centre of the dog’s throat with both contact points firmly against the skin. A loose or off-centre fit will result in missed corrections or inconsistent performance. This is the most common cause of a “not working” complaint with vibration-sensor collars.
Important safety note
Do not leave any bark collar on your dog for more than 8–12 hours per day. Extended wear can cause skin irritation or pressure necrosis. Check the contact area daily. Laws relating to static correction bark collars vary by Australian state and territory — please review our terms and conditions before purchase.
